Installing LibreOffice in Ubuntu

Due to the recent events it is time to dump OpenOffice and install LibreOffice. At this moment repository doesn't contain prepared packages so we will install it by hand.

This blog post is now obsolete.


  1. Go directly to the download page and choose your desired version, deb package format, architecture.

    For example to get version 3.3.0-rc1 for x86 architecture use URL:
  2. Download the following archive:


    Don't forget about desired language pack (if applicable):

  3. Import code signing key by executing the following command:

    $ gpg --keyserver hkp:// --recv-keys AFEEAEA3

    Verify all downloaded archives:

    $ gpg --verify LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz.asc  LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
    $ gpg --verify LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_langpack-deb_pl.tar.gz.asc  LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_langpack-deb_pl.tar.gz
  4. Extract main archive and install Libre Office packages:

    $ tar xvfz LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz
    $ cd LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS
    $ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
    $ sudo dpkg -i desktop-integration/libreoffice3.3-debian-menus_3.3-3_all.deb 

    Extract localization archive and install remaining packages:

    $ tar xvfz LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_langpack-deb_pl.tar.gz
    $ cd LibO_3.3.0rc1_Linux_x86_langpack-deb_pl/DEBS
    $ sudo dpkg -i *.deb
  5. Download preffered dictionary.

    To install it start Libre Office, and open menu Tools, and select Extension Manager.

  6. Remove Open Office:

    sudo apt-get remove openoffice*
  7. Done.
